Basic Addition and Subtraction - KidsCast Junior!

Hello Kids! Welcome back to a KidsCast Junior post. Today we will be learning all about adding and subtracting numbers. Hope you guys are excited. Let's start!

So First of all, what is addition and subtraction?

Addition: Addition is one of the operations of Arithmetic (a branch of Math). It means taking 2 or more numbers and totaling them together. The result is called the sum and the numbers which you are adding are known as the 'addends'. The symbol is + (plus sign).

Eg: Imagine you have 2 apples and your friend had 3 apples. The sum of these apples, that is, the apples you both have together is 5.

Parts of the addition sentence:

Subtraction: Subtraction is the second operation in Arithmetic.  It is the process of taking a number away from the other. The symbol is - (minus sign).
Eg: Suppose you have 10 pencils. If you take away 2 you get 8 pencils. This '8 pencil' is called the difference.

Parts of the subtraction sentence:

How do you add a number with another?

Consider this line. This is called a number line as it contains numbers placed at equal intervals. It can be extended infinitely in any direction.

Lesson Explainer: Comparing and Ordering Integers | Nagwa

To add 2 numbers, for eg: 4 and 2, we start from the bigger number (in this case 4) and count forward as many times as the smaller number (in this case 2 steps from 4).
This will be:

Therefore, 4 + 2 = 6.
We can state it like this...
Four plus two is equal to six.

Let's try with another example.
7 + 3 =

To add these numbers above we will count 3 steps from 7.
This will be:

Therefore, 7+3=10.
We can state it like this...
Seven plus three is equal to ten.

Hope you understood addition!!

How do you subtract a number from another?

Consider this number line.

To subtract 2 numbers, for eg. 9 and 7, we start from the first number in the subtraction sentence (in this case 9) and count towards the left-hand-side. Since we are subtracting 9 and 7 we move 7 times to the left from 9.
That is:

Hence, 9 - 7 = 2
This can be stated as...
Nine minus seven is equal to two.

Let's attempt another example.
8 - 4 =

To subtract these 2 numbers, we count 4 times toward the left-hand-side, from 8.
Let's solve it using the number line:

Therefore, 8 - 4 = 4
We can state it like this...
Eight minus four is equal to four. And kids, you can even use yours fingers for simple addition and subtraction. For example: 3 + 4 = ? ; Take 3 fingers, Add 4 more fingers and then count the fingers, it will be 7. So 3 + 4 = 7. Same way you can use your fingers for subtraction too.
