The Nile - The Longest River in the World!

 



Hey There! Welcome Back to KidsCast! Are you interested in Geography? Because today, we'll be learning about the Longest River in the world - The Nile! So, without further ado, let's start!

Introduction:

Nile is a river flowing from Lake Victoria (in Uganda) into the
Mediterranean. It is considered the Longest River in the Africa. It's length is approximately 6650 Km long, but it's exact length is still a debate.

The name is derived from the Greek word Neilos (Latin: Nilus), which means a river valley. 

The Nile River is a vital waterway for Transport, when Motorways are not practical (e.g. floods)


Countries it Flows Through:

The Nile flows through the countries:
Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC), Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

Fun Fact: The Nile River Basin covers about 1/10 of the area of Africa!

Sources:

The Nile has two major sources. The White Nile and The Blue Nile. The White Nile supplies lesser water compared to The Blue Nile.

The White Nile's source is The Luvironza River.
The Blue Nile's source is Lake Tana.


Papyrus Reeds


The Nile river was also a good location for growing The Papyrus Plant. Ancient Egyptians used Papyrus for making rope, boxes, cloth, etc. The most important use was Making Paper. 
They also used Papyrus Boats which were useful to trade. 

Conclusion

Today, 95% of the Egyptians live within a few kilometres from the Nile. Canals bring water from the river to irrigate farms and support cities. The river also supports fishing. It has served as a great use for transportation for thousands of years. 

The Nile River also continues to be an important trade route, connecting Africa with markets in Europe and beyond.
