History of Jaisalmer:

The origins of Jaisalmer can be traced back to the 12th century when Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput king, founded the city. Legend says that Jaisal, the youngest of six sons, established the city after consulting a hermit named Eesaal. He chose Trikuta Hill as the site for his new capital and built a majestic fort on top of it, which came to be known as Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Quila.

Jaisalmer became a prosperous trading center along the Silk Route, trading silk, spices, and precious stones. In the 16th century, it came under Mughal rule and reached its golden era. However, the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century brought instability, with frequent attacks from rival clans. In the 19th century, Jaisalmer came under British protection, leading to stability and prosperity once again.
