What Are Fractions? - A Simple Yet Interesting Topic in Math!

Hey Kids! Welcome back to KidsCast! Have you ever heard about Fractions in Mathematics? Well, if you don't know, no worries when we're here! So here is our new article, which might be an easy and a perfect guide to Fractions for you! So let us begin!

Introduction:

A Fraction in Mathematics means a Part of a Whole. A Fraction might be a portion, section or a part of a whole shape or other object. The word Fraction comes from the Latin Word: "Fractio" which means "to break". For example:  In the Image above, you can see a Whole Circle. But in the other circle, you can see that the circle has been divided into 4 Parts. And each such part us written as ¼ part of the circle.

Let us take another example. If you cut a circle shape of cake into two equal parts, then the cake will have two parts. And each part will be called ½ or Half part of the cake. It is simple! You might find it a bit confusing or difficult at first, but after you learn it, you'll master it!

Understanding Fractions Better:

Let us understand Fractions better by studying a Word Problem/Question:

You and Your three Friends have ordered a Pizza at a restaurant🍕. The pizza arrived, and now you want everyone to get the same amount of size or equal portion of pizza. So if there are four friends in total, then how will the Pizza get divided? And what will each part of the pizza be called?

Solution:

Total Number of People = 4

Amount of Pizza = 1 Pizza

Hence, the Pizza will be divided in 4 parts or slices

Now, As Pizza has been divided into 4 pieces, each part will hence be called ¼ part of the Pizza

So you see children? Fractions are simple, you just need to understand them!

How to Write Fractions?

You can Fractions Simply by drawing a horizontal line or slanting line, separating the numerator and the denominator. Check out the ways to write Fractions in the below image:

Parts of a Fraction:

A fraction has three parts: The Numerator, The Denominator, and the line separating both. The Numerator is the top half of the fraction and tell the number of parts you have. The Denominator is the bottom half of the fraction and tells the number of parts in a whole. And there is also the line separating the Numerator and Denominator which doesn't have a name.

So kids, this was some introduction to Fractions, what are they, how to write fractions, and the parts of a fraction. We'll keep updating this article as we write more content, and we'll also make more articles of Fractions and also about other topics in Mathematics. So till then, Stay Healthy and Happy Learning!
