The Stuck Ship
Hey Children, today we are going to discuss about a Ship which was stuck! We know, it sounds really weird, but yes it is true. So let's start.
The ship "MV Ever Given" or its nickname: "Evergreen", is a cargo ship, which was officially launched on 9 May 2018. It is one of the largest container ships in the world! This ship is operated by a Taiwanese company named "Evergreen Marine Corp", and owned by a Japanese company named "Shoei Kisen Kaisha". The operating company is a container transportation and sea shipping company which owns 39 container vessels.
However, recently, this ship was on the way to deliver the cargo, and was travelling through the Suez Canal. Now if you don't know what is Suez Canal, let us first explain it to you!
The Suez Canal is a long canal which connects the two massive Seas: the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It helps thousands of ships every day to travel through it as otherwise without this canal, the ships and vessels have to travel a long distance, from the Southern tip of Africa and then again turn and turn. You can see the difference in the following map:
So you see the difference? So, the Evergreen Ship was travelling through this canal. And on 23rd March 2021, after entering this canal, it somehow turned by mistake and its both the ends got stuck onto the banks of the Canal. As it was so large, it could not even move.
This event was so bad, that because of the Evergreen Ship, other ships could not travel through the Suez Canal as the way was completely blocked. The Suez Canal operators sent cranes and boats, and they thoroughly tried to free the stuck ship. After so many days and nights of digging and pushing, on 29th March 2021, finally the Ever Given Ship was freed! The ship then continued its journey. But however, the Suez Canal and Egyptian Authorities, fined the owners of the Evergreen Ship $1 Billion as a compensation of being stuck in the canal. And the Evergreen ship is now held in the Great Bitter Lake, the another part of the Suez Canal. They say that the Ship will only leave when the investigation gets completed, and the owners of the Evergreen Ship pay the Egyptian Authorities the compensation.
The location of Evergreen Ship still held in the Suez Canal.
So the ship MV Ever Given is still held in the Suez Canal, wanting to reach its destination, and the crew members wanting to go their home! We hope that within a few days and weeks it is allowed to go and continue its journey!
