What are Mirages? - You don't see what you see!

Hey kids! Welcome to KidsCast! again. Today we will be learning about Mirages. Have you experienced some kind of mirage? Where did it happen? Let us know in the comments. Anyways, let's learn about Mirages in detail!

So, what actually is a mirage? A mirage is an image but it is really not there! Generally, mirages are most seen near water or flat surfaces like you can see in the cover photo of this post.

Now that we know, what a mirages is, let's learn about "When do Mirages Occur?"

Mirages occur when the ground is very hot and the air is cool. The ground warms the air that is just above the ground. When the light moves through this air which is cool and warm the light is bent. The most spectacular mirages occur in wide areas of flat land when too many hills etc. will prevent the refracted light from reaching your eyes.

How are Mirages Formed?

This 'bending of light' is also known as refraction and create false images.

In the image above, you can better understand about "How are mirages formed?"

Our brain doesn’t see the image as bent light from the sky. Instead, our brain thinks the light must have come from something on the ground. So, we see the sky on the ground. That's why the color of the water is always blue.

Mirages are mostly seen in deserts and airport tarmacs. The water or any other imaginary image disappears when we are closer to the supposed place.

The Most Famous Mirage:

The Fata Morgana Mirage

The most famous mirage is the Fata Morgana. It is seen over the Strait of Messina, which connects between Italy and Sicily. It is usually noticed at sea but can also be seen on land.

So kids, this was a brief about Mirages. We hope you understood the main concept behind them. And this was all for this post, we'll see you next time. Till then Stay Healthy and Happy Learning!
