What is a Volcano? - The Mighty Lava Eruptors
Hello Kids, and welcome back to KidsCast! Today, we are here with our brand new article on the topic- "What is a Volcano?". In this article, we will talk about what a volcano is, the types of volcanoes, what causes it to erupt, and some other facts about Volcanoes. So, are you ready for this amazing article, kids? Now, without any further ado, let us get started!
What is a Volcano?
If put into simple words, Volcanoes are an opening in the Earth's crust that allow lava, molten rocks, gases, and debris to escape to the surface. Now, what is lava? Lava is a hot or semi-molten rock that is erupted out of Volcanoes. During a volcanic Eruption, dangerous gases, ash, lava, and rock materials come up to the surface of the earth. These can cause a large amount of loss of life and property. Surveys claim that Volcanic eruptions and wildfires have affected 6.2 million people! Wow, isn't that a crazy amount of people?
Now, we need to take a deep dive into the concept of Volcanoes to actually understand what causes them to erupt. Most of the time, the reason for a volcano to erupt is the 'increase in Magma static Pressure'. So, what is Magma now? Magma is the molten or semi-molten natural material from which Igneous Rocks are formed. This Magma is found below the surface of the Earth.
The Magma stays beneath the surface of the earth, thanks to the Lithostatic Pressure created by the Lithosphere, but when the Magma Static pressure increases, it erupts out of the vents of a Volcano.
Volcanoes are mainly classified into 3 types:
- Active
- Dormant
- Extinct
-Active Volcanoes: Pretty clear by the name itself, these are the volcanoes that have recently erupted and showing signs of erupting sometime soon again.
-Dormant Volcanoes: These are the volcanoes that haven't erupted in a long time but have the possibility to erupt in the future.
-Extinct Volcanoes: These are the volcanoes are the ones who erupted thousands of years ago, and have no possibility to erupt in the future. They are basically the oldies ;)
Some Fun Facts about Volcanoes!
