Why are there So Many Languages? - The Answer!
Hey kids! Howdy? KidsCast! is glad to see you again! So today we are going to answer a very interesting question... Why are there so many languages in the world? Do you wonder the same? Well, let's begin diving into the topic!
Backstory:
So before we understand why there are so many different languages in the world, we must understand how such different languages were made. It was due to the migration or moving of people from one place to many other places, and their different experiences, and different lives, that we have so many different languages in this world. How is that so? Well, let's understand.
Many thousand years ago, early humans were the first humans or people who lived in the world. They lived in a time period called The Stone Age. They first lived in caves, but soon these people and the next generation of these people made small places to live, made houses, and started farming and agriculture, during the Neolithic Revolution, as mentioned in another article of KidsCast. The creation or making of languages still remains a mystery, because nobody knows what happened in the past, really, as such. Still, many people, scientists, philosophers and historians say that as the early humans first on earth were the stone age people, they moved to many different places throughout the world or throughout the earth. It is believed that stone age people from Africa, went to continents like Europe, Asia and Australia, and then the Americas.
So for now, we must understand that it was due to the migration or moving of ancient humans to many different places, that different places have different languages. But how did this happen? Let us learn more!
The Reason:
Now we have to answer the question that how did moving of the early humans made so many different languages. So the answer to this is simple! See, the early humans went and moved to many different places in the world and settled there. They started living there, making new communities, houses and villages. Now, it must be important to know that before making languages, how did these early humans communicate or talk to each other, because guess what, there were no languages before that!
Sadly, this is also an unsolved mystery. See, it is pretty difficult to predict what happened in the past, and hence, it is a mystery, but for this too, many researchers have predicted, how these early people or humans communicated. It is believed that these early humans used to draw various drawings or patterns on the walls of the caves, to communicate with each other. Isn't it very tiring to draw everything you want to say to whomever?! But yes, they did so. And they might also communicate with gestures too, using hands and body actions. So before making languages, this was how the early humans communicated with each other.
Now the same question arises again, how did the moving or settling of early humans make different languages? Just how?! Well, now finally let us reveal the answer! The early humans communicated using drawings, patterns and gestures. But when these early humans moved to various new places throughout the world, they had different experiences, they saw different environments and different cultures. And as they developed, they began to make new languages. And the isolation or staying away from other groups of humans made these people of a particular place or region, develop their own language. And because there are so many places in the world, hence different regions came up with their own languages!
Thus, the diversity of different types of languages in the world is very much related to the history, and development of languages, different environments and experiences, different cultures, traditions, religions, different beliefs, etc. Due to all these, so many different places, regions and countries made so many different languages in the world!
Now, thankfully we have the English language which is globally accepted as the common language everyone can speak, so different people from different places can communicate! Click here to read our article about: English - A Connection or Competition?
